Erin Cohn Curtis was appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom in March 2020 to serve as CalEPA’s Deputy Secretary for External Affairs and Communications. Prior to this appointment and since 2009, Curtis worked in communications and external affairs in the U.S. Department of the Interior, most recently as Assistant Regional Director for External Affairs for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service’s Pacific Southwest Region. She spent 2 1/2 years as Public Affairs Officer for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation’s Mid-Pacific Region, and held top communications positions for the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Land Management in California, Alaska and Idaho. Before federal service, Curtis was Associate Vice Chancellor for External Affairs and Educational Services for the Coast Community College District in Orange County.
Curtis attended American River College, holds a bachelor’s degree in Government/Journalism from California State University, Sacramento and a master’s in Public Administration from California State University, Long Beach. She started her career as a newspaper and radio journalist in the Sacramento area.
When founder Wendy Kopp first proposed the concept in her senior thesis at Princeton, her adviser told her she was “quite evidently deranged.” Now Teach for America has a $212 million budget and a staff of 1,400.

Prior to relocating to New Zealand, Erin travelled the world on cruise ships and enjoyed meeting people from all walks of life. You may have come to know Erin through her involvement with Edna McCulloch Kindergarten, Weston Playcentre, Fenwick School, Valley Sports Club, Mainly Music or Scentsy.
Erin’s love of Oamaru began when she met local boy, Gavin Kingan, in her homeland, Canada. They returned to New Zealand in 2005, first residing in Christchurch, before settling in Oamaru in 2008 and starting their family.
Adept at online advertising, social media, email marketing and online analytics, Erin brings clients’ messages to life online. Erin previously served as a digital strategist in both the Chicago and Boston offices of an international marketing agency, where she supported clients with business-to-business and business-to-consumer outreach. Erin has orchestrated successful social media campaigns for commercial, public policy and advocacy initiatives.
